My family and I stopped at the Indian mounds on a whim while traveling the highway. It was late in the day, and it was about to close in 30 min.
The main visitors center has several depictions of life for the Natives in the area and artifacts found in the property.
I really enjoyed seeing the mounds and fort built around it. The grounds were completely natural, and with a chill in the air and dusk moving in, it gave the area an ethereal feel.
The mounds are quite a ways from the highway, but I would recommend stopping in and exploring.
I absolutely love this place. It is peaceful and beautiful. The small museum is nice, the site itself is interesting and lovely, and the nature trail is nice and relaxing.
Really unique site with a great little museum and knowledgeable staff. Grounds are well maintained and east to get around. Learned a lot about the local native inhabitants who lived in the area around 500 years ago.
It's a little off the beaten path but we'll worth visiting. The staff is very informative and polite. The site is pretty much a self guided tour with 3 replica buildings which you can go inside.
We took a group of elementary aged children here. While the interior facilities needed updating, it was very clean inside. The exterior facility was in pristine condition with easily marked paths for walking and lots of interesting materials to learn about. We especially enjoyed the guide provided by the knowledgeable staff.
Back in the early 70's when I was a kid my grandparents took me there once it was something to behold.. the local Indian tribe didn't like the fact that you could push a button to view the remains of their ancestors
And artifacts. Remember.. it was something to see as a kid that I'll never forget.. I understand why they did away with that display
It's a very beautiful place with a lot of good historical information. When it's wet, it can be a little muddy, so wear shoes that won't slip and slide. There is a nice nature trail to walk. Unfortunately, the gift shop/info center was closed, but the gentleman came outside to greet us and explain the various pamphlets. He was very knowledgeable and gave good directions on how to begin our self guided tour
Neat little place to learn about local Indians from the older days. Beautiful scenery and knowledgeable staff. Great place for a field trip, a family to visit, or just anyone who enjoys learning while being outside. Plan to come when they're hosting an event for the ultimate experience!
